Help · Getting started
Create a band
Create a new band in Pulse, choose its web address, and switch between your bands.
What it's for
Every band in Pulse has its own members, events, songs and settings. The person who creates a band becomes its Band Admin and can then invite everyone else.
When to use it
- You are setting up Pulse for your band for the first time.
- You play in another band too and want to manage it separately.
- You signed in but are not in any band yet – Pulse opens Create a band for you.
Create a band
- Open the band menu at the top of the sidebar and select Create a band. If you are not in any band yet, the page opens on its own after you sign in.
- Enter the Band name.
- Check the Web address. Pulse fills it in from the name; it is the short name in your band's links (/b/your-band). Use 3–40 lowercase letters, numbers or dashes.
- Under What are you? choose Band, Orchestra, Choir, Brass band, DJ / project or Other. Below, Pulse shows what it prepares for that type – Lineups (an orchestra, choir or brass band gets its seats ready, e.g. Violin I ×4 or Soprano ×6), Attendance and Setlists; untick what you don't want.
- Choose the Country. Below it you see the band's language, currency and time zone – the language is yours, the currency and time zone come from the country. Select Change to set them differently.
- Select Create band.
Result: The band opens and you are its Band Admin. Nobody else can see it until you invite them.
Waiting for approval
- When Pulse approves new bands, a band you create after signing up shows … is waiting for approval instead of its pages.
- The Pulse team confirms it, usually within one working day; until then nobody can be invited to it.
- You get a notification and an email when it's approved – then the band opens as usual.
Set up the new band
- Open Settings (under Admin in the sidebar) and check the band's Time zone, Currency and Default language – see Band settings.
- Under Seats, add the positions you need for a gig, and add any missing instruments under Instruments.
- Under Permissions, check what each role may do – see Roles & permissions.
- Invite your bandmates from Members → Invite member – see Invitations.
What a new band starts with
- Six roles: Band Admin, Band Manager, Band Member and Dep / Guest (these four can't be deleted), plus Road Manager and Road Crew.
- You as the only member, with the Band Admin role.
- Settings: the language, currency and time zone chosen while creating the band (Settings → regional settings), setlists and lineups switched on, individual availability answers and gig fees visible to admins only, members' contact details shared with bandmates.
- The default list of instruments, and a starter list of genres and tags (in Songs & Setlists) you can rename or delete. There are no seats yet – you add them yourself.
- Every new band gets 30 days of the Pro plan free; then you choose a plan or stay on Free – see Plans.
Switch between bands
- Open the band menu at the top of the sidebar (the band's name and logo).
- Under Switch band, select the band you want.
Result: The band opens. Next time you open Pulse, it starts in the band you used last.
Permissions and limits
- Anyone with a Pulse account can create a band. Creating a band does not add you to any other band. Accounts made through public sign-up can create a few new bands a month (3 unless Pulse changes it) – write to support if you need more.
- The web address must be unique across Pulse and can't be changed later in the app, so choose it carefully.
- To join an existing band you don't create a new one – ask its admin for an invitation.
Examples
You also play in a wedding band
Create a second band from the band menu. Its members, events and settings are completely separate; switch between the two bands in the band menu.
Common mistakes
- Creating a new band when you wanted to join your bandmates' band. Ask their admin for an invitation instead; after you accept it, switch to their band in the band menu.
- Keeping the default time zone or currency when your band is not in the Czech Republic. Change them in Band settings before you add events and fees.
Troubleshooting
"That web address is already taken." is shown.
Another band already uses that web address. Add something to it, for example the town: brass-band-riverside.
"Use 3–40 lowercase letters, numbers or dashes" is shown.
The web address may contain only a–z, 0–9 and dashes, must be 3–40 characters long, and must start and end with a letter or number. Accents and spaces are not allowed.
Pulse says I have created as many new bands as allowed for now.
Accounts made through public sign-up can create only a few bands in 30 days, as protection against misuse. Wait a few days, or write to Pulse support – see Help & support.
I can't invite anyone – Pulse says the band is waiting for approval.
New bands of accounts that signed up themselves are confirmed by the Pulse team first. Invitations work as soon as the band is approved.
